FOOD GUIDE TO TENBY

Penally Abbey Hotel is based in the beautiful and tranquil village of Penally, just 2 miles from the pretty seaside town of Tenby. Whilst the hotel is perfectly nestled away from the hustle and bustle you can either walk 20 minutes across Tenby South beach or make the 5 minute drive into the action. The perfect combination!

In all of our rooms we provide hand written guides that are a compilation of our staffs favourite places to eat, explore, sunbathe and visit on both sunny days and rainy days. If you’re like me, and like to research a place before you visit, then here is the inside scoop on where we think is great for lunch, dinner, beer and everything in between. We are extremely lucky in Penally to have such a wonderful town which has three beaches, a gorgeous harbour and all the holiday atmosphere you could possibly need on our doorstep.

So, here it is, Tenby at its finest…

Coffee, Cafes and Delis…

Stowaway Coffee

This little coffee shop is the worst kept secret in Tenby. Hidden in the harbour wall it serves delicious coffee with the expertise and coffee skills of the big cities! We recommend that you get a take away coffee, one of their cracking fresh crab sandwiches and wonder along the harbour to take in the views.

Loafley Bakery and Deli

Loafley bakery is a breath of fresh air for Tenby. Think fresh, homemade products every day with different breads piled high. This is a bakery in it’s true sense. Pick up a fresh focaccia sandwich, a platter of cured meats and make the exceptionally hard decision from the daily cake selection for the ultimate picnic lunch. Their retail section also means you can take a variety of local produce home with you - from Coed Canlas marmalade to Pembrokeshire chocolate. Thank you for coming to Tenby Loafley, you are a delicious smelling joy to locals and visitors alike!

Café Vista

If you manage to bag either the table in the window or one on the little terrace overlooking the harbour you can enjoy a wonderfully made coffee or a cold glass of wine with the most incredible view of Tenby. Whether it’s a relaxed breakfast or whiling away the afternoon, you can’t go wrong here. This lovely café also has live music throughout the summer months – huge bonus!

Fuchsia Café

Located down a pretty mews in the heart of Tenby this really is a little oasis away from the fish and chip shops and busy pubs. Café come florist, (why didn’t I think of such a dreamy combination!?) serving delicious vegetarian dishes and lovely juices. On a sunny day you can sit outside in this perfect sun trap.

Fish and Chips…

Park Road Chip Shop

In Tenby you are inundated with chip shops. So here it is, for the best fish and chips head to Park Road chip shop. End of story.

Top tip, give them a call and put your order in en route as they cook everything fresh so it takes about 10 minutes – especially when it is busy (which is most of the time!).

Bars, Restaurants and Beer…

Salt Cellar Tenby

This place is all about quality food cooked perfectly. If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit special or simply want somewhere where you can guarantee a delicious meal, great menu and friendly service look no further. The chefs are two passionate guys who are keen to put Tenby back on the map for food. The menu is fresh and uses locally sourced ingredients. On sunny days you can sit on their terrace which looks right the way from Castle beach across to South beach, and out to sea with Caldey Island thrown in for good measure.

This is easily a contender to be our favourite restaurant in Pembrokeshire! Go Go Go!

Top Joes, Tenby

This pizza restaurant is my go to. If you like pizza, and I mean GREAT pizza, this is the place for you. Top Joes keeps it simple and does it unbelievably well. All ingredients are fresh, authentically Italian and cooked in the pizza oven. You can also take away a pizza, which is the perfect compromise if it is too busy and you can’t get a table – definitely book in the summer months/peak times.

A little side note – they also do a few simple pasta dishes (all homemade and delicious) and a small number of salads if you’re not an avid pizza lover!

Opening Hours: Mon- Fri 5pm-Late | Saturday & Sunday 12noon-3pm/ 5pm- Late

If you like beer, local produce and young people with heaps of enthusiasm and passion for beer, this is it. The Sand Bar is run by Tenby Brewery which is a micro brewery. We serve a small selection of their beers at the hotel but if you want to have the full experience head down the pretty mews (the same one as Café Fushsia) and enjoy the huge number of beers on offer. They also have a little retail space where you can buy independent beers. Whatever night you decide to pop in you’ll find it bustling and full of people drinking the ever changing beer selection, independent and locally sourced spirits and enjoying the fantastic menu of ribs, nachos and burgers – the perfect food for sampling beer.

Rhosyn Restaurant | at Penally Abbey

In 2019, Penally Abbey opened a new restuarant called Rhosyn. I know I may be slightly biased, but Rhosyn is one of my favourite places to enjoy a cocktail and a wonderful dinner overlooking the sea. With twinkling chandeliers, delicious, locally sourced ingredients and a fantastic wine list, you cannot find a more perfect place to celebrate any special occasion. The menus change each month to reflect the seasonal ingredients in Pembrokeshire and the Rhosyn signature cocktail is growing more famous each day! Whether you fancy a cocktail and a dessert at the end of a long day in the sunshine or a romantic three course dinner, Rhosyn is the perfect backdrop.
